Drinking water hydrates the body—most assuredly. However, what water actually does is enable cells to function properly. Water delivers nourishment to the skin in the form of blood and the water flushes out toxins in the body that normally end up in the blood system and ultimately out of the pores.
Water helps to plump up the skin and keep it hydrated, both preventing wrinkles and preventing the skin from producing sebum. The problem with sebum isn’t necessarily in and of itself. When paired with dead skin, it can harden and plug pores. But what is more problematic is the bacteria responsible for producing acne that feeds off of sebum. This is why gentle exfoliation is also important for skin care.
Caffeine might stimulate the mind and a glass of alcohol can help to unwind, but both lead directly to dehydration. The problem with both caffeine and alcohol is that, although both are made of mostly water, hardly any of that is actually absorbed into the body. Caffeine and alcohol trick the body into releasing the water.
So stick with a simple routine: cleanse at night, cleanse in the morning, apply a hydrating cream at night and remember to drink plenty of water. Your complexion will thank you for it!
