What spray tanning tips do I need to know to get flawless results? What will happen during my appointment? Is there anything special I need to do before I tan? If you’re getting ready for your first spray tan, chances are your mind is filled with concerns from how to prepare your skin to maintaining the colour afterwards.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we hear from beginners – plus all the spray tanning tips you need to make your first experience a good one.
What exactly is a spray tan?
The main tanning agent in spray tans is DHA (aka dihydroxyacetone). DHA creates colour when it comes into contact with the natural amino acids on your skin’s surface. The chemical reaction produces a golden-brown colour that will vary in darkness depending on the level of DHA in your spray tan solution.
Is spray tanning safe?
Because spray tans only affect the dead skin cells on the top layers of your skin, they never reach your bloodstream and are considered completely safe for topical use. As an extra precaution, you can ask your salon technician for disposable safety accessories to cover your eyes and nose during the application.
What should I do before my appointment?
To get even coverage, you need to start with a clean and smooth surface. The day before your appointment, use an exfoliating cleanser to polish your skin to perfection. If you need to shave, do it 24 hours before your session so your skin has time to heal and avoid discolouration. Since waxing is tougher on skin, it’s best to get this done a full two days before your appointment.
What should I expect from my first spray tanning session?
If you’re doing automated spray tanning, you’ll be put in a private room with a stand-up booth. Once you step into the booth and start the process, the machine’s spray nozzles will cover your body in a lightweight mist. If your appointment is for airbrush spray tanning, you’ll be sprayed by an experienced salon technician. It’s up to you if you want to be naked, wear your own underwear or ask the salon for disposable pieces.
Will my skin turn orange?
As long as you choose a well-known brand in a shade that fits your skin tone, your colour will look completely natural. Ask your tanning technician for advice and err on the side of caution – it’s easier to build colour than remove it.
What spray tanning tips do I need to know to maintain my colour longer?
After you get home, wait at least eight hours before showering. If you want to wash off the temporary bronzer, you can do a quick rinse with cool or lukewarm water. After your tan develops, use a hydrating moisturiser every day to keep your skin healthy and prevent fading.
