What is the Safest Way to Get a Tan?

Tanned skin is in, and there are many different ways you can follow the trend with salon services and at-home products. While the sunless tanning industry was still in its infancy, traditional sun baking and tanning beds were the top choices.

However, new advancements in sunless tanning solutions, plus the irrefutable evidence on the dangers of sun exposure, have put self-tanning products miles ahead of UV tanning.

Spray tanning is one of today’s most popular solutions, but plenty of people who are new to spray tans still wonder about its long-term safety. Whether you are just starting out or are thinking about going sunless, learning more about spray tans and other tanning alternatives can help you make the right decision.

Is UV Tanning Really That Bad?

In a nutshell, the answer to that question is yes. Exposure to ultraviolet rays has been linked to a long list of alarming health risks that start with premature wrinkles and go all the way up to the deadly skin cancer melanoma. Doctors not only encourage their patients to skip tanning beds, they also recommend avoiding UV rays altogether by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing. Self-tanning products do contain the chemical DHA and sometimes other artificial ingredients, but they are considered to be completely safe as long as they are used on top of the skin only.

Is Spray Tanning Safe?

Getting a spray tan is far better for your health than traditional tanning, but there are a few precautions you should take when spray tanning or using any self-tanning products. Because extensive research is needed to learn more about the effects of inhaling tanning solution, you should always protect your nose, mouth and eyes when you are in the tanning booth. Since it can be tough to shield your face from tanning mist when you are getting a salon spray tan, ask your technician for protective goggles. When you are at home, be just as careful when applying tanner to your face. To avoid accidentally inhaling or absorbing chemicals, use your fingertips to rub a few drops of your tanning solution around your mouth and eyes.

Are There Any Organic Spray Tans?

If you are still worried about the potential effects of DHA on your body, you can try tanning with organic products. While they usually produce lighter results, all-natural tanners can be enhanced with bronzers or layered for deeper colour. To discover what some of today’s organic solutions can do for your skin tone, try Norvell’s award-winning organic spray tans. Available in two different shades, Norvell’s natural tanners are loaded with a potent blend of nourishing ingredients and completely free of chemicals.
